Although appearing simple in design, Jackie Gale’s award winning Naive Art is surprisingly intricate and detailed. Using scraps of fabric (and frankly, anything she can find!), free motion embroidery and applique, Jackie magically captivates the spirit and essence of a place in each piece of textile art in a simple and contemporary way. If you feel inspired by Jackie’s use of scrap materials, why not try your hand at this issues ‘How To’ and use those scraps to ‘paint’ a textile flower picture with the guidance of textile artist, Barbara Shaw. Better still, use the techniques shown to create your own interpretation.
Brenda Gael Smith tells us about her new exhibition ‘A Matter of Time’, and how the 32 pieces of art on show demonstrate the various artists own perception of the theme.
Inspired by her study of Biology, Carol Quarini identifies connections between lace and biology, and translates this into her work. Mimicking the delicate lace-like structure of biological cells and tissues, Carol produces unique pieces of lace embedded into silk paper.
Whichever avenue of needlecraft appeals to you, we hope you take inspiration and enthusiasm from these artists, and make your own interpretations in your textile art.
